Wednesday 18th September Railways of Argentina John M Join John on Zoom this evening for a talk showcasing the railways and magnificent landscapes of Argentina. Argentina had a great railway network up to the 1930s, as befitted its then status as a super-rich country. The railways were mainly built by British companies and used British-built engines and rolling stock. Many of the stations look as if they have been lifted from the UK, and many railwaymen from Britain emigrated to work and run these railways, and most were owned by British companies until the 1940s. The railways played the primary role in opening up the interior of this huge country and in providing the conveyer by which Argentina’s huge products of beef were moved to ports for shipment to feed the growing cities and populations of Europe. Wednesday 25th September Budapest Slideshow Dave P Our May trip to the Hungarian capital revisited. Expect pictures of Roman and Medieval buildings, the Castle and Royal Palace, sumptuously decorated Parliament building, a cruise on the Danube, a tour of the Buda Hills, monuments of German and Soviet occupation as well as historic thermal baths. Note: Unless otherwise stated, Wednesday events start at 8.30pm on Zoom. Please get in touch for joining instructions. |
