Programme for May 1999

Wednesday 5th May

Pictionary

Dave J

An evening of juvenile fun involving scribbling on paper and lots of shouting. Always a good laugh!

Thursday 6th to Sunday 9th May

Weekend in Holland

Dave

Yes, the event of the year! Debbie is getting hitched in grand style and has invited us all to the do at Scheveningen, The Hague’s seaside resort. The hostel in The Hague is very smart and along with the nuptuals there are museums, art galleries, theatres and cinemas, the bulb fields, windmills and canals, and the sand sculptures in Scheveningen itself. Bikes can be hired from the hostel to explore the excellent network of cycle routes. Cycling across the dunes for pancakes is an absolute must and the seafood is to die for.

Possible itinerary is: Ferry Thursday 10:40am from Harwich, arrives Hook of Holland 15:20. Short train ride to Den Haag HS, 5 min walk to City Hostel. Friday 3pm Debbie & Nico’s wedding in Scheveningen, party in the evening. Sunday 16:05 ferry from Hook, arrives Harwich 18:50 (Also possible to take a later ferry, or to fly Stansted-Amsterdam).

Approx prices: Ferry £24 each way (£3 for bikes). Hostel £12 per night B&B. Please let Dave know if you want to come (and note that you’re still welcome even if you don’t know Debbie!)

Wednesday 12th May

Pub Night: The Three Elms

Trudi

Come out this splendid spring evening for a relaxed drink at the Three Elms in Chignall St. James from about 8pm or so. Anyone wishing for a brief walk beforehand (around 7:15 to 8:15) should contact Trudi.

Sunday 16th May

Westwood Thaxted Walk

Lorna

When Roy Norfolk came to talk to us about the wonders of woodland management he showed us some amazing slides of Westwood through the seasons and the variety of plant life it supports. Spring is the best time to visit, so we are including it in our Sunday walk.

Meet at the The Star, Thaxted, at 12pm for lunch, leaving for Westwood at 1:45. (The Star is on the left shortly after the petrol station as you arrive on the B184 from Dunmow). Please let Lorna know if you are coming.

Wednesday 19th May

Committee Meeting

The Committee

Come along and share your ideas for future trips and events. Everyone welcome. Cakes and biscuits provided as a form of enticement.

Wednesday 26th May

Mountain Safety & Navigation

Lorna

We’ve not had one of these for a while and with the Scotland trip imminent it seemed like a good idea. Come along and bring your maps and compasses, Lorna will be showing us the essentials!

Friday 28th May to Sunday 6th June

Scotland: The Isle of Skye

Lorna

See the superb Cuillin ridge in all it’s glory and the Old Man of Storr in splendid isolation on this wild island, the largest of the Inner Hebrides. We will be staying in the old post office in Portree which boasts a safe so secure and immovable that it is still part of the hostel common room. Book now for a trip you will remember for years to come.

Friday: Head North to Edinburgh or other stop en route.

Saturday: Ferry Mallaig to Armadale, Isle of Skye. Stay at Armadale Youth Hostel.

Sunday to Friday: Portree Independent Hostel.

Saturday: Glencoe Youth Hostel
