Programme for April 1999

Wednesday 31st March to Tuesday 6th April

Easter Trip to Eskdale in the Lake District

Dave

We will be staying in Eskdale, in the south western part of the Lake District, close to Scafell and Wastwater. The Eskdale Centre is a former village school now used as an outdoor centre. It has dormitories for 26, showers, full central heating, well equipped kitchen (including catering oven and freezer), drying room etc.

The centre is available to us for six nights. It is easily reached from the A595 Barrow to Whitehaven road, via Santon Bridge (see map above). The car park is small, but there is ample additional parking at the top of the centre’s field. If you need to contact us there, the centre payphone number is 019467 23377.

The cost will be £8 per night (including food), plus £20 to the petrol fund for those sharing lifts from Chelmsford.

Please let me know as soon as possible which nights you want to stay, whether you need or can offer a lift, and if you’re willing to cook a meal.

Deposit of £20 to Dave to reserve a bed.

Wednesday 7th April

O’Connor’s Pub

Anyone not still on their way back from the Lake District is invited to join Lorna for a drink at O’Connor’s (Hall Street)

Meet at 8pm promptly outside the fire station (junction of Coval Lane and Waterhouse Lane - park in Coval Lane car park) Note: In the event of a fire, the visit may end suddenly! Afterwards a drink at the Marsham Arms

Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th April

Saffron Walden Youth Hostel

Jim

Our "Millennium Challenge" project, to restore the walled garden at Saffron Walden hostel with a medieval theme in keeping with the building, starts in earnest this weekend. The planned working party for 27 & 28 March to clear the garden is cancelled as there is a group in the hostel during the day who don't want us there. We have arranged a new weekend; 17th & 18th April to clear away the brambles, weeds rubble etc. We also need volunteers to make cups of tea and sandwiches for us!

We start at about 12pm on Saturday and then work until the hostel re-opens, and then start again at 10am on Sunday once the hostel closes. Beds are available for Saturday night, please let Jim know, and there is a good pub opposite the hostel.

Please let Jim know if you can come, even if it’s only for an hour or two, and bring thick gloves (the brambles looked particularly vicious), and garden tools such as secateurs, spade, loppers, shears etc.

Wednesday 21st April
