Wednesday 6th May Blankety Blank Yes, it’s time to dredge up this age old gameshow, dust it off and give it the CYHA special treatment. Hours of good, clean family fun, and no Terry Wogan - I personally guarantee it!
Wednesday 13th May Badminton Dave J Not the horse trials, but an evening shuttlecock bashing at Riverside. If it’s anything like last time it’ll be great fun, but watch out for those ultra-competitive girlies! Please let Dave know in advance if you’re interested so he knows how many courts to book.
Wednesday 20th May Computer Games Blow the dust off those crumbly old computer relics and bring them down to the Y. A special prize for anyone who has a machine older than Dave’s ZX81.
22nd to 31st May Scotland: Mull & Oban Proposed itinerary:
Mull is a large, unspoilt island with a coastline of over 300 miles, yet its population is only about 2500. It is much-visited for its gorgeous scenery (hills, waterfalls, sea caves, forest walks and beaches). The southern and western parts of the island are where you will find the mountains. The highest at 3169 feet is Ben More, from which there are excellent views of the Isles. Tobermory is the capital of Mull and is well known for the brightly painted buildings of its seafront. There's even the wreck of a Spanish galleon in the bay. Visit the Handmade Chocolate Factory and don't miss your chance to see the UK's smallest theatre at Dervaig - Mull Little Theatre. Many boat trips from Mull to its neighbours (Iona, Staffa and the Treshnish Isles) are possible. Fingal's Cave, on the island of Staffa, is a sea cave formed within hexagonal basalt columns (like those of the Giants Causeway in Northern Ireland). It was the inspiration for Mendelssohn's Hebridean overture. Iona is thought to be the first Christian site in Scotland. As such, this tiny island, now in the care of the National Trust for Scotland, is very popular with pilgrims and tourists who come to visit the Abbey. Staying in scenic Oban you can see the castles - Dunollie, Gylen and Dunstaffnage. Visit Kerrera, or the Sea Life Centre or go to Sailing School. Walk up Pulpit Hill and take in the view. Also plenty of scope for Munro-bagging, including the superb multi-topped mountain cirque of Ben Cruachan, with its spectacular rocky aretes and sensational coastal views.
Total cost of the week is expected to be around £140 (including hostels, petrol, ferries & meals). There are unlikely to be any more beds available now, but check with Lorna if interested.
Wednesday 27th May If anyone who’s not going to Scotland wants to organise something for this evening, let us know before the next committee meeting.
