Programme for March 2000

Wednesday 1st March

Megazone

Jim

An evening of zapping and dodging in the laser gun toting halls of Megazone in New Writtle Street, Chelmsford. Meet in the United Brethren Pub just opposite 8 to 8.30 pm (and probably afterwards as well if you don't fancy shooting your friends). Please let Jim know at least a week in advance if you are interested as we may need to book.

Sunday 5th March

Sunday Walk

Lorna

The forest has now re-opened since the air crash, so this walk can go ahead as planned. A walk of about 6 miles through the old deer park of Hatfield Forest. Meet at the YMCA at 10.30, or 11 am at the forest car park (3/4 mile south of the A120 at Takeley Street, grid ref 546203). We will stop for lunch (about 1pm) at the Hop Poles Inn, Bedlar's Green. Please let Lorna know in advance if you want a lunch as the pub is quite small and we will certainly need to book tables.

After the walk there is an option to visit Saffron Walden Youth Hostel for the tree planting ceremony, celebrating all our work in the garden to date! Everyone is then welcome to come to Dave and Ali's for tea and little pink cakes.

Wednesday 8th March

Pancake Wednesday

Lorna

In true CYHA style (as in never getting anything quite right) we have switched Shrove Tuesday to Wednesday so we can have all the fun of flipping pancakes all over Lorna's nice new kitchen. The fun starts from 8pm, bring raw ingredients and lots of interesting fillings.

Wednesday 15th March

Committee Meeting

Yep, that time of the month again. Come along and bring plenty of ideas for future events, especially for the summer ahead.

Friday 17th March

Play: Summer Day's Dream

Trudi

Join Trudi for another of Chelmsford Theatre Workshop's brilliant productions at the Old Court Theatre, Springfield Road. It's also worth mentioning that this event is extremely close to a certain Chairperson's birthday.

Three strangers crash-land in post-atomic war England and start to question their values and way of life. Please let Trudi know at least a week in advance if you're thinking of coming as CTW productions frequently sell out.

Saturday 18th March

Day Trip to Boulogne

Lorna

Similar to our trip in '96, we'll be taking the Hoverspeed Seacat from Folkestone to Boulogne for a day of eating, drinking, and sightseeing. Walk round the city walls, see the cathedral and castle. Ferry is £10 return (foot passengers), and leaves Folkestone at 11.30. Return Boulogne 21.00.

£10 to Dave by 1st March to book your ticket please, or call Hoverspeed on 0870 240 8070.

Wednesday 22nd March

Wine Tasting

Roz

New World vs Old World. Come along to this unusual experience and learn about spitting and reverse-spitting from at expert from the "Bottoms-Up" off-licence. We will sample and compare about seven wines. Please let Roz know two weeks in advance if you are coming so we can arrange to have enough wine.

Don't miss this chance to become a wine buff! 8.30 - 10pm at the Charles Peters Lounge, YMCA. Approximate cost £2 each.

Saturday 25th March

Millennium Dome and Pub Crawl

Tom

A fun-packed day visiting the Millennium Dome followed by a pub crawl. Meet at Chelmsford railway station for 9:07 train (change at Stratford for Jubilee line to North Greenwich) or meet inside the Dome at 11:00 (at the Meeting Point in "Harrison" visitor services). Contact Tom for details of pubs for the evening.

To book your Dome ticket ring 0870 606 2000 or visit www.dome2000.co.uk. Adult price is £20 (+booking fee), but if you quote your YHA membership number you get student rate (£16.50). Book more than 7 days in advance to avoid queuing for ticket collection.

Wednesday 29th March

Book Review

Ali

You should have got through some of those books you got at Christmas. Come and tell us what's good and what's bad. The last book you read; your all-time favourite; funniest passage; most disgusting fact (I've got quite a few of those!); best poem. Mark passages you'd like to read to everyone.
