See also news and pictures of our project to transform the garden at Saffron Walden Youth HostelWednesday 5th April Pub Night - The Compasses Inn Come and spend a beautiful spring evening at the charming Compasses Inn in Littley Green (from about 8.30). Leave Chelmsford on A130 towards Gt.Dunmow; turn right onto B1417 (towards Felsted) for ¾mile; turn right into lane opposite Hartford End Brewery; after another ¾ mile left at T junction, pub is on left. Grid ref TL 699173. 7th to 9th April Lightvessel and Sailing Weekend Nigel A weekend on board an imaginatively converted lightvessel, moored in an Essex salt marsh. Whether you want to come for dinghy sailing, coastal walks or just to relax and smell the fresh salt air, this weekend has many options. The lightvessel offers a very high standard of accommodation, showers, full central heating and comfortable saloon. Tea and coffee making facilities are always available in the galley. Full board provided, shared cabins. Please bring your own sleeping bag. Blankets, pillows and pillow cases provided. Absolutely no sailing experience required, R.Y.A. qualified instructors accompany all boats, and a safety launch will follow sailings. Waterproofs and buoyancy aids provided. Please bring change of warm clothes and footwear. Trainers worn in the boats may get wet! To find your way to the lightvessel, take the only road to Tollesbury from Tolleshunt d'Arcy (B1023). On entering Tollesbury drive through the village past the main square on your right until you meet the fork in the road signposted "Waterfront - Industrial Area". Take a left turn here and drive until you arrive at the sail lofts on your left which are painted a light buff colour. Turn left between the first two sail lofts. The small Fellowship Afloat car park is to the right. Park in this raised level for safety from high tides! The lightvessel is berthed in the saltmarsh. A torch may come in handy here.Aim to arrive about 9pm on Friday (please do not arrive before 8pm as cleaning will be in progress) Please contact Nigel if you need any more details, or see the Fellowship Afloat website. Wednesday 12th April Committee Meeting As usual everyone is welcome to come to the Charles Peters Lounge and discuss the future events and trips the group will be booking in the months to come. All ideas and suggestions gratefully received. Wednesday 19th April Mountain Safety and Navigation Just time to brush up on those essential techniques or learn the basics before our Easter trip to the Lake District. Bring along maps and compasses to practice with. Thursday 20th April to Tuesday 25th April Matterdale, Lake District
The Matterdale Centre is a former school building near Ullswater in the North East of the Lake District. The Centre is well situated for walking and has a well equipped kitchen, central heating and baths. How to get there: From A5091 half mile north of Dockray Village take lane west (opposite Matterdale Church, signposted "Matterdale Centre"). Grid ref: NY392223. See map. Mattresses, pillows & blankets are provided; you'll need to bring a sleeping bag or sheets & pillow case. Some of us will be leaving on the Thursday morning spending 5 nights there and returning on the Tuesday. (N.B. Tom is planning to go part way on Wednesday night if anyone else is interested) Those who can't take time off work will probably go on the Thursday evening and return after four nights on Easter Monday. The cost will be about £7 per night (including food) plus £28 to the petrol fund for those sharing lifts from the Chelmsford area, making £63 for the full 5 night trip, or £56 for the 4 nights. There are 24 beds which will be allocated to the first 24 people paying deposits. Anyone who hasn't yet done so, please let Dave know as soon as possible which nights you intend to stay, if you need a lift or are willing to drive, or if you are willing to cook a meal. Tuesday 25th April to Friday 28th April Crianlarich, Scotland Since Easter and May Bank Holiday are only a week apart, you have the option of travelling North instead of South for the few days in between. Crianlarich is a comfortable hostel centrally located in magnificent hill-walking country. Twenty Munros in the locality. Deposit £37 (4 nights). Total cost will be about £65 including petrol from Matterdale. Saturday 29th April to Monday 1st May Langdon Beck, Upper Teesdale Comfortable hostel in an excellent location to enjoy the solitude of the remote North Pennine fells. On the way back from Scotland, or just for the weekend. Deposit £20 (2 nights). Total cost around £50 including return trip from Chelmsford.
Wednesday 26th April No Meeting As most of our members will have either just got back from the Lakes or be somewhere in the wilds of Scotland, we thought we'd skip this meeting (unless someone volunteers to organise something!) |
