Wednesday 1st August Evening Walk - Highwood Meet at the car park opposite the Viper PH (Grid Ref TL641018, see map) at 7.30pm (prompt) for a short walk lasting about an hour and a half. Experience tells us that long trousers and insect repellent are a must if only for the beer garden! Wednesday 8th August Pub Night - The Queen's Head Trudi What, two Wednesdays running at a pub? Trudi is obviously leading us all astray. Apparently the Queen's Head was nominated for a best pub award and Trudi feels it is our obligation to support local businesses. We shall be supporting this one from 8.30pm in the bar. Formerly called The Partners, the pub is in Lower Anchor Street, off B1007 New London Road, Chelmsford. (Grid ref TL702063, see map) Cycling Weekend to Epping Forest Hostel Cycle on quiet lanes from Chelmsford to Epping Forest on Saturday. Stay at this traditional hostel, hidden in the forest near High Beach, with a meal at a nearby pub, and cycle back to Chelmsford on Sunday. Cycling distance will be 30 miles or so each way, with plenty of pub stops etc. Meet at 10am on Saturday outside the YMCA in Chelmsford. £10 will book your bed. Wednesday 15th August Committee Meeting Time again for our monthly planning meeting for all the wonderful trips and events coming up. Feel free to drop in, particularly if you have any suggestions - everybody welcome. Wednesday 22nd August Memory Training Ann It's all very well exercising our legs, but none of us are getting any younger so some exercise for that big muscle between your ears is bound to come in handy. Come along for tips and tricks as well as some light-hearted games you haven't played since you were a kid. 24th to 27th August Trudi A picturesque former watermill in its own grounds on the outskirts of a small unspoilt border town in the Shropshire Hills. Clun has four pubs, two teashops and a ruined castle, and is the site of many battles with Welsh raiding parties (although not recently!). Enjoy the green rolling hills and valleys or visit Clun Castle and Bury Ditches Fort. Further away are Stokesay Castle and Acton Scott Farm Museum. The Shropshire Way passes through the town. This hostel is a charming building with wooden beams and sloping floors. We have booked it for our exclusive use for the three nights of the bank holiday weekend. A barbecue in the grounds is a possibility. £30 deposit. Estimated total cost £57. Scotland Slides Just to prove it didn't rain all the time, Dave and Clive will be sharing their slides of bonny Scotland with us. Feel free to bring along your own pictures, shortbread, malt whisky etc. to add a little atmosphere to the proceedings (see a quick preview here) Note: Unless otherwise stated, Wednesday events start at 8.30pm at the YMCA in Victoria Road, Chelmsford |
