Programme for September 2001

Wednesday 5th September

Great Notley Discovery Centre

Nigel

"Healthy Body, Healthy Mind, Healthy Planet"

Discovery CentreNigel has the keys to the brand new Discovery Centre . This is an environmental interpretation and outdoor activity centre developed by Braintree District Council. Nigel has volunteered to give us a personal guided tour. The Centre aims to provide facilities and activities that spark thought about how our physical and mental health can affect our attitudes and actions towards our planet. It is an example of "sustainable building", with a wind turbine, solar heating and water re-cycling.

Great Notley Country Park and Discovery Centre lie on the A131 south west of Braintree (Grid ref TL734213, see map) From Chelmsford, take the A130 towards Stansted, turn right at roundabout onto A131 towards Sudbury; just before reaching Braintree you come to Great Notley - the Discovery Centre is on the left after the Tesco's roundabout. Meet at the Centre at 8pm for the tour (Nigel will co-ordinate lift sharing if you let him know you're going).

Wednesday 12th September

Committee Meeting

Please come along to share your ideas for future events and trips away. We will be looking at events for November and starting to think about places to go next year. Everybody welcome.

14th to 18th September

Eskdale, Lake DistrictThe Eskdale Centre

Dave

A long weekend at the Eskdale Centre, postponed from Easter due to Foot & Mouth. Access to the central high fells is now open, and more areas are being opened all the time.

Eskdale is in the south western part of the Lake District, close to Scafell and Wastwater. The Eskdale Centre is a former village school now used as an outdoor centre. It has dormitories for 26, showers, full central heating, well equipped kitchen (including catering oven and freezer), drying room etc.

(for more details, see the Eskdale Centre website).

Access to this part of the Lake District is now fully open. The Ravenglass and Eskdale miniature steam railway runs from Dalegarth station (100m from the centre) to the coast at Ravenglass. There are many options for walks between stations on the line.

Scafell, view from above BootOther nearby attractions include Muncaster castle, Hardknott Roman fort, Muncaster and Eskdale water mills, a choice of pubs, and England's highest mountains!

The centre is available to us for three nights (Friday to Sunday), with possibility of extending to include Monday night if there is sufficient interest. It is easily reached from the A595 Barrow to Whitehaven road, via Santon Bridge. Half a mile east of Eskdale Green, turn off opposite George IV pub, towards Boot and Hardknott Grid. The centre is on the left after 1½ miles, opposite the track to Trough House Bridge. Grid ref NY172006, see map. (If you get to Dalegarth station you've gone 100m too far). The car park is small, but there is ample additional parking at the top of the centre's field. If you need to contact us there, the centre payphone number is 019467 23377.

The cost will be about £10 per night (including food), plus £25 to the petrol fund for those sharing lifts from Chelmsford.

You will need to bring a sleeping bag.

Deposit £20 to book your bed

Wednesday 19th September

Pub Night

Nigel

Come and join us for a sociable bevvy in the charming Crown public house in the centre of Sandon (just by the Church, see map), from 8:30pm onwards.

Python Night

Tom

Nothing to do with big snakes, but everything to do with dead parrots, spam and how to identify trees from quite a long way away. If you are not familiar with the works of Monty Python, prepare yourself for an evening of revelation as we read our way through some of the choiciest Python scripts.
