Wednesday 2nd August

Evening Walk

Nigel

Meet at The Cats public house in Woodham Walter at 7:30pm for a pleasant evening walk which will last approximately 1½ hours. En route we expect to visit Blakes Wood and be amazed and entertained by bog plants, owls and giant ants nests before returning to the pub for a well earned drink.

The Cats is in Blue Mill Lane, at grid ref TL815076, see map.

Barn dance tickets are £6. Dave is collecting money.

Wednesday 9th August

Games in the Park

Lynn

Meet in Central Park (near the pond and skateboard ramps) from 7:30pm and bring frisbees, football, rounders bats - in fact any thing or any one you want to play with! Should the weather not co-operate then head for the YMCA as usual. Either way events will be rounded off by some beers (it's only sporting!) in the Railway Tavern from 9pm.

12th & 13th August

Saffron Walden Cycling & Barbecue

Jim

Saffron Walden Youth Hostel

We return to Saffron Walden Hostel to admire our handiwork over the last year, this time without a garden tool among us. We will cycle from Chelmsford through the north Essex countryside, crossing the Essex Alps to Saffron Walden. The pace is gentle, with a pub lunch and tea shop/pub stops. The distance is about 35 miles in each direction.

On Saturday night, we will have a barbecue, funded by the President's award prize money. Since the work we did on Saffron Walden's garden won us the money, it's only fair that we should enjoy it there. Everyone is welcome to join us at the barbecue, whether or not you are cycling or staying the night.

Beds £9. Meet 10am Saturday at the YMCA, Chelmsford, or from 6pm at Saffron Walden Hostel.

ESSENTIAL! Please let Jim or Dave P know if you are coming to the barbecue, or don't expect a sausage when you get there!

Wednesday 16th August

Committee Meeting

As usual everyone is welcome to come to the Charles Peters Lounge and discuss the future events and trips the group will be booking in the months to come. All ideas and suggestions gratefully received.

Saturday 19th August

Jim's Barbecue

Jim

It's that time of year again! Join Jim for a celebration of his birth from 2pm at his house in Billericay. Please bring a deckchair, a sausage and your own tinnies.

Bretton Hostel, Peak District

Janet

Bretton Youth Hostel

A wonderful little hostel 1250ft up on Eyam Edge. Near a tiny hamlet, Bretton offers basic facilities but superb views across unspoilt countryside. The hostel is just 2 miles from the historic plague village of Eyam with its fascinating church and monuments. Well marked paths and trails over the White Peak are within easy reach too.

Booked for our sole use for 3 nights. We plan to have a barbecue one evening. Total cost of the weekend will be around £50. N.B. All 18 beds at Bretton have now been taken, however, several of us have booked some extra beds at Eyam hostel 1½ miles down the road (£30 deposit please).

Eyam hostel is a unique Victorian house perched on a wooded hillside overlooking the village, with extensive grounds (including a crazy golf course), and comfortable accommodation.

Bring your cheque book, or leave it at home, it's up to you.

Helen will round off the evening teaching us to relax with neck and shoulder massage.
