Butlers Retreat, Epping Forest

Coronation Bank Holiday Monday 8th May

A Right Royal Forest Walk

Dave P

The Epping Forest Centenary walk commemorates Queen Victoria's visit to dedicate the royal forest. It visits Elizabeth I's hunting lodge, and the Kings Oak at High Beech.

Meet us at Epping (£6 to park at the station) by 10am to get Central Line to Leytonstone. We'll then walk back: the first half mile is urban, then we carry on through full length of the forest, about 12 miles in all. There'll be pub and tearoom stops, but best to bring a packed lunch.

Wednesday 10th May

Committee Meeting

Join us on Zoom for organising events for August and trips for the winter.

Sunday 14th May

Sunday Walk: Long Melford

Nigel

Meet in the Old School car park just off Melford Green, CO10 9DX, at 10:30am. Parking is free, but the parish council ask for a cash donation of a couple of quid.

The walk is 10 miles going out to Lavenham and back. Be sure to bring some lunch, but there's a good chance of refreshments at the end.

Jim

An old favourite of ours, The Viper is tucked away in the woods at Mill Green, CM4 0PT. We'll be having a drink from 8:30pm, but let Jim know if you fancy going a bit earlier for a bite to eat.

Wednesday 24th May

Pub Walk - Rose & Crown

Cress

Meet in Writtle village car park, CM1 3DT, at 7.30pm for a short walk followed by a drink in the Rose and Crown from about 9ish.

Mounthooly Bunkhouse

Friday 26th May to Sunday 4th June

Mounthooly & St Cuthbert's Way, Northumberland

Dave P

Mounthooly is a remote but comfortable bunkhouse in the beautiful College Valley in North Northumberland, just below the Hen Hole and The Cheviot, less than a mile from the Scottish border.

We'll use Mounthooly as a base to walk St Cuthbert's Way over 7 days, using cars/taxis to access each section. Described as "one of the most beautiful, varied and enjoyable long distance walking routes in Britain", this 63 mile trail links Melrose Abbey in the Scottish Borders, where St.Cuthbert was prior in 650AD, with Holy Island off the Northumberland Coast, his eventual resting place.

There are also options for low level walks in the College Valley as well as climbs in the Cheviot Hills. Wildlife in the valley includes red squirrels, otters and a thriving population of feral goats.

Following 7 nights at Mounthooly Bunkhouse, we'll spend 2 nights at Edmundbyers hostel, a cosy 17th century inn near Consett, ideal for exploring the Durham Dales and visiting Beamish open-air museum.

All bedding is provided at both hostels.

Deposit £150 please. (Total cost of the trip is expected to be roughly £400 per person, including accommodation, meals and petrol contribution).

Note: Unless otherwise stated, Wednesday events start at 8.30pm on Zoom. Please get in touch for joining instructions.
