Bazelgette & the Great Stink

In preparation for our visit to the Cathedral of Sewage, and just because it’s really interesting, John will give a talk on London sewerage and why it was so badly needed.

Crossness "The Cathedral of Sewage"

A morning stroll by the Thames followed by a visit to Crossness Pumping Station to experience the glory and genius of the Victorian age. Built in 1865 by Sir Joseph Bazalgette as part of Victorian London's sewerage system, Crossness Pumping Station is a Grade 1 Listed industrial heritage site.

The visit includes:

- Tea & biscuits on arrival

- An illustrated talk giving the historical context.

- A look at the sewer system model showing Bazalgette's engineering solution to London's public health crisis.

- A guided tour of the Crossness site and engines.

- Time to take photos, explore the Great Stink exhibition and see the wonderful collection of toilets.

Bring a packed lunch and meet at 10.30am at Woolwich Elizabeth Line station. A walk of about 4 miles on the Thames Path will take us to Crossness at 1pm where we can eat our lunch and enjoy the masterpiece of 19th-century engineering, architecture, and design. Leaving about 4pm, we'll walk 1½ miles to Abbey Wood station for the train home.

Cost of the visit is £20 per person - we're collecting money in advance to confirm numbers.

Pics from two recent adventurous visits to this exotic border with Europe. From Istanbul to Cappadocia, sailing, canyoning, swimming and sightseeing. Join us on Zoom from 8.30pm.
