Kings Hostel, Dolgellau

At the southern end of the Snowdonia National Park, Kings hostel is a good base for a high-level hike up Cader Idris or gentle trails leading to the Mawddach Estuary.

The hostel is a country house with riverside grounds set in a peaceful wooded valley five miles from the pretty market town of Dolgellau.

How to get there: Off the A493 Dolgellau to Tywyn road - 1 mile west of Penmaenpool, turn opposite Abergwynant Trekking Centre then 1 mile up the lane to the hostel. (postcode LL40 1TB, grid ref SH68316)

Deposit £30 to book your place. Estimated total cost £86 including bed, meals and petrol contribution.

Toys Hill Walk

Meet at the National Trust car park at Toys Hill, nr Westerham in Kent (TN16 1QG) at 10:30am for a gorgeous walk along the Greensand Ridge with its expansive views. The walk is about 9 miles. Please bring sandwiches.

Pub Walk – The Queens Head, Maldon

Meet in the Butt Lane car park (pass the Swan PH in the High Street, then turn left and left again, see map, postcode CM9 5HD) in Maldon at 7:30pm for a walk of about 3 miles ending up at the Queens Head for a nightcap at about 9pm.

Join Jim for a tasty curry at 7:30pm at the Coach and Horses in Billericay (Chapel Street, CM12 9LU, near Waitrose).
