Hunstanton Hostel

Hunstanton, Norfolk

Jim

A weekend cycling on the Norfolk coast.

Located only 2 minutes walk from the town centre and seafront, YHA Hunstanton is a pair of Victorian townhouses built of warm red Norfolk carrstone. There are plenty of local cycling routes, and bike hire is available locally if you don't want to bring your own bike. Or if you prefer to walk, the Peddars Way and Norfolk Coast Footpath are nearby.

'Sunny Hunny' is the only east coast resort in Britain which faces west. The town was development in the nineteenth century as a purpose built coastal holiday village. Hunstanton has a friendly atmosphere and is best known for its large sandy beaches, beautiful sunsets and unique red and white striped cliffs. Much of the surrounding North and West Norfolk coastline is a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It is a peaceful area, home to many nature reserves and charming villages, churches and historic sites.

Directions: From coast road (A149) turn into Sandringham Road, then take third left into Avenue Road. Hostel on right (20 metres)

Deposit £33 will book your bed. Estimated total £50.

Wildlife Guided Walk in Hylands Park

Dave P

Join Tony Walentowicz, the Keeper of Natural Sciences from Chelmsford Museum, for a walk and talk on the flora and forna of Hylands Park. We'll visit some of the lesser-known corners of the park, including ancient woodland and the banks of the River Wid. Wildlife sightings in the park have included Otters, Great Crested Newts, Dormouse, and the very rare Golden Hoverfly.

Use the Writtle bypass entrance to Hylands Park, and meet at the far left end of the car park (Grid ref TL681047, see map), for a prompt 7:30pm start.  (The park closes at 9pm).

(Note change of programme - this event, postponed from 9th July, replaces the planned Heybridge walk)

We’ll stop for lunch at a pub or café in Saffron Walden. The walk is about 8 miles.

Viper Bat Walk

Ali

We think the woods around Mill Green will be a really good place to see bats on a late summer evening - or perhaps it's the lure of the Viper Pub?

Meet at the car park opposite the Viper (1½ miles north of Ingatestone, on the road between Mill Green and Highwood, grid ref TL640018, see map) at 8:00pm (prompt) for a dusk walk with Dave's bat detector, or about 9pm for a drink in the pub.

Friday 22nd to Monday 25th August

Maori carving, Whakarewarewa

Wednesday 27th August

New Zealand slide show

John M

John will be giving an illustrated talk on New Zealand. This will feature the Polynesian settlement, Maori culture, the coming of the Europeans and the conflicts between them. The history of goldmining in the country will also be looked at. The role of intensive animal husbandry in opening up the hinterland of New Zealand is well known. The role of goldmining in this process is less well-known. All this and more about a country so close to us and yet so distant.

Note: Unless otherwise stated, Wednesday events start at 8.30pm at the YMCA in Victoria Road, Chelmsford
