or months they toiled
Amazing how, with aching limbs and sweaty brows,
They dug, they sifted, lifting clods,
With heroism like Grecian gods.
skip removed, the waste accrued
Whilst workers moaned and longed for home.
The tea some comfort, but scarce enough
When the task seemed really tough.
plan evolved, for greatest ease
To plant a lawn with leafy trees
The seeds were sown, and great surprise!
The blades of grass began to rise.
ncroaching weeds beat a retreat
No longer growing wild, but neat,
Replaced by shrubs in ordered rows,
And scented plants to bring repose.
he final job, to lay the path,
On lumpy ground (a lot to ask!)
The slabs all crumbled, Robert cursed,
And even the optimists feared the worst.
ut challenges can be overcome,
And engineers can find them fun,
So trenches were dug and sand was laid,
And gradually the path was paved.
he task concluded with the century,
And the planting of a medlar tree,
With wild acclaim and minor fame,
And workers muttering 'Never again!'
