A January Weekend in the Shropshire HillsSeventeen of us (something of a record for a January trip) descended on the tiny Wheathill hostel in Shropshire. Some of the group were a little startled to find the toilet was at the end of the garden, the heating was limited to the common room, and if you wanted to wash in hot water you had to fetch it in buckets from the kitchen, but that's all part of the joys of the simple hostel experience! It certainly is a delightful rural location. On Saturday we walked from the hostel to Brown Clee Hill, the highest point in Shropshire (except George and Tom who had more distant hills to bag). After some rather complicated route finding on the little-used lower paths, we were greeted my fine frosty views of the surrounding countryside. We descended to a pub to warm up, where Trudi and Geli settled in for the afternoon while the rest of us faced a few more miles of indistinct paths and bogs back to the hostel for Helen's delicious meal and Lynn's birthday cake. Quote of the day: Janet declaring in a loud voice to the whole pub that Chris was useless in bed (... to warm her feet on) Sunday saw us walking from historic Ludlow, with fine views of the castle, finishing with tea and cakes at the assembly rooms. Most people said they really enjoyed the weekend, so I guess we can survive without central heating after all! Dave P Some of the results of our game of consequences: "Clive met Flossie the Sheep in the local abattoir... He said: I like my sausages well done, please... She said: actually David Mellor's more my type... The consequences were: they went to live in a remote corner of Scotland and were never seen again. "Dave met Debra in... the ladies toilet at Paddington station... He said: it will only cost you £2.50 to join Chelmsford YHA... She said: I'll snog you for a fiver... The consequences were: they lived happily ever after and took out a lifetime subscription to their local YHA group." And many, many more... |
