Sunday 3rd October Dengie Cycle Ride Doug A cycle-ride around the Dengie Peninsula, between the estuaries of the Blackwater and the Crouch, remote and atmospheric, around 20 miles in length. Views are of field, marsh and water. Most of the ride is along tarmac road, with a gentle off-road 3½ mile section along the sea wall, taking in the 6th century Saxon church of St.Peters-on-the-Wall, and Bradwell Power Station, now closed. This area, overlooking the North Sea would be a good spot for a picnic lunch, although there are opportunities for supplementary refreshment at the various pubs en-route. Meet at 10.30am at the station car-park at Southminster (GR TQ962996). Wednesday 6th October Pig & Whistle Pub Meal George This evening coincides with George’s birthday & everyone is welcome to share in the celebrations with a slap up meal at the Pig & Whistle in Chignal Smealy. We meet at 7:30, but let George know if you’re coming to give an idea of numbers. The pub is on the Chignal Road, NW of Chelmsford (post code CM1 4SZ). Sunday 10th October Kent Sunday Walk Cress Walk along top of North Downs, then drop down to pilgrims way. Visit village of Ryarsh with ancient church and neolithic tombs. Pub at next village, Addington, the Angel 14th C on village green. Walk is 8.5 miles, car park at Trosley Country Park (Grid Ref TQ633611) just off M20 J2, then A227. Meet at 10.30am. Tea available at Country Park at end of walk. Wednesday 13th October Annual General Meeting Please make every effort to come to our AGM. We will be reviewing the year’s events and voting on the committee to take us into the next year. Wednesday 20th October Committee Meeting Join us for trip planning for next summer and all the best in local walks. Everybody welcome! Wednesday 27th October Chelmer Tavern Pub Quiz Dave & Helen If you fancy some nosh too, join Dave & Helen from 7:30pm ready for the quiz at 9pm. (The Tavern is in Dukes Lane, just off A138 Chelmer Rd, 2nd roundabout north of Army & Navy) Friday 29th to Sunday 31st October Sherwood Forest YHA Sherwood Forest is a purpose-built Youth Hostel is set on the edge of Sherwood Forest. Follow in Robin Hood's footsteps through ancient woodland to the Major Oak, visit the excellent visitor centre just 10 minutes' walk from the hostel. Clumber Park, (National Trust) is just a short distance away and offers bike hire and 20 miles of cycle routes to explore. The hostel is in Edwinstowe, signposted from A6075. Deposit £33 please.
