There are many walks in the area; Shining Cliff Woods is a Site of Special Scientific Interest due to the variety of plants and animals. The wood supports a diverse bird community including warblers and flycatchers and, in the winter, bramblings and other finches. The National Tramway Museum and Carsington Water are nearby. How to get there: From the A6 at Ambergate, just south of the junction with the A610 to Nottingham, turn into Holly Lane (signposted with a finger post) and cross over a stone bridge. Follow the road for about 1½ miles until you come to the third farm (Netherpark Farm). Turn right where a finger post directs you into the wood. Go through the five-barred gate and along the track to the parking area (do not obstruct the track to the hostel). The hostel is a 10 minute walk down the woodland track from the car park, bring a torch! (hostel is at grid ref SK335522 on OS Landranger 119) Deposit £20 please.
