Northern Ireland - Mourne Mountains & Causeway Coast

CYHA is going to Northern Ireland. First, the Mountains of Mourne which are proper jagged mountains on the Co. Down coast, including the highest in Northern Ireland, and then the Antrim coast, including the Giant's Causeway, Carrick-a-Rede and the Glens of Antrim. There is the chance to go via Belfast in the middle of the week.

The plan is to stay in independent hostels; The Hutt (formerly YHA Newcastle Co. Down), and Sheep Island View in Ballintoy for 4 nights each. We will fly from Stansted airport to Belfast International airport and hire cars.

Expected cost is around £400. Flights and accommodation have now been booked for those who've paid.


Wednesday 7th June

Evening Pub Walk – Mountnessing

Meet at The Prince of Wales, Mountnessing (CM15 0UG, GR TQ632979) at 7:30pm (there’s a public car park behind the village hall, opposite the pub) for a 4 mile walk, taking in the windmill, Ingatestone Hall and the quiet back lanes of Padhams Green. We’ll be back at the pub shortly after 9pm for a well-earned drink.

Bike Ride: Ring around Braintree

Meet at 10:30am at Rayne Station car park for a 36 mile ride taking in the little villages circling Braintree. Ample pub opportunities and tea room at the finish, even the possibility of a short cut if the full route looks too daunting. Please bring sandwiches for your lunch.

Midsummer Evening Bike Ride

Meet at the Viper, Mill Green at 7.30p.m. for an easy ride along lanes and byways and woodland trails. Post-ride refreshment will be at the Viper PH from 9pm (CM4 0PT for sat-navs, grid ref TL640019, see map). Bring your bike lights in case we're late back.

Anglesey Abbey Walk

Meet at Anglesey Abbey at 10:30am (CB25 9EJ, charge for car park, National Trust members free) for a 9½ mile walk taking in the fields and fens around Little Wilbraham, Bottisham and Lode. There is also the bonus of the very nice NT tea room at Anglesey Abbey at the end. Bring sandwiches.

Pub Meal – The Compasses

Meet at The Compasses, Littley Green (CM3 1BU, see map) at 7:30 pm for a bit of something to eat. The pub is famous for its huffers, but also does more traditional pub grub. Let Cress know by 21 June if you want to come.
