Wednesday Meetings, Weekends Away & Other Events

December 2016

Friday 2nd to Sunday 4th December

Woody's Top, Lincolnshire

Dave P

Tucked away in the Lincolnshire Wolds, YHA Woody's Top is a converted farm building in great walking country, surrounded by rolling countryside, located in a secluded area near the hamlet of Ruckland.

This is the perfect time of year to visit Donna Nook nature reserve to see seal pups being born on the beach - this time last year there were more than 1700 pups on the beach. The seal pupping spectacle at Donna Nook is one of the wonders of Britain's coastline; a viewing area enable you to get very close. And there’s a circular walk we can do that takes you along the coast and into the surrounding countryside and nearby villages.

Then on Sunday we have the option of going to the city of Lincoln, with its cobbled streets and medieval square between the impressive Norman castle and magnificent gothic cathedral. This will be the backdrop for the famous Christmas Market which takes place in Lincoln this weekend.

Turkey Dinner

We have exclusive use of the hostel this weekend, and plan to kick-off our Christmas celebrations with a turkey dinner on Saturday night. We have exclusive use of the hostel, so will have full use of the kitchen to prepare a four course extravaganza and have a bit of a party.

Directions: From the A16 take the minor road to Ruckland, turn left and YHA Woody’s Top is 300 yards from the junction on the right. Postcode: LN11 8RQ.

Deposit £30 to book your place. Total cost of the weekend expected to be less than £60 each (including bed, meals and share of petrol form Essex).

Christmas Party, Chignal St James Village Hall

Saturday 17th December

Christmas Party

Chignal St James Village Hall, where we usually hold our Christmas party, is being re-built, and we’ve now been told that it won’t be ready for our planned event on 17th December. We haven’t been able to find another suitable venue for that date, so unfortunately it looks like this event will be cancelled. Please join us for a Christmas dinner at Woody's Top hostel on 3rd December instead.

Wednesday 21st December

Christmas Drinks

Cress

Join us for a Christmas drinks at the Red Lion on the High Street in Billericay (CM12 9AJ). A former coaching inn, this is a traditional pub specialising in Marstons ales.

Derwent, Glenbrook Centre

Wednesday 28th December 2016 to Monday 2nd January 2017

New Year Trip to the Peak District

Nick

We are staying at Glenbrook Outdoor Activities Centre, which is between the villages of Hope and Hathersage in the beautiful Derbyshire Peak District. An excellent base for walking and exploring the Peaks, easily accessible by road or rail, and close enough for nights out in Sheffield.

We have booked the 'Derwent' building which we last used for our 2012/2013 New Year trip. This purpose-built accommodation has a large hall, comfortable dormitories, well-equipped kitchen, showers and full central heating.

Bedding: Pillows and blankets are provided, but you need to bring a sleeping bag and pillow case.

How to get there: Glenbrook is on the north side of the A6187 (formerly A625) Hathersage to Castleton road, between the Rising Sun Hotel and the Travellers Rest. OS map sheet 110 grid ref SK191828, postcode S33 0AL, see map. You can also get there by train - both Bamford and Hope stations are 1½ miles away.

Turn right in front the main Glenbrook House, 'Derwent' is the huge tent-shaped building. Parking by the house is limited, so leave your car in the car park at the bottom of the drive.

Deposit £40 to book a bed please.

Note: Unless otherwise stated, Wednesday events start at 8.30pm at the YMCA in Victoria Road, Chelmsford
